Overview
Jocelyn Affleck’s dissertation is a study on the Dutch design pedagogy. The idea of going against the norms and breaking the rules is a recurring theme throughout her thesis which I felt needed to be reflected in the visual style of the publication: swiss modernism, cold and mathematically structured—in complete opposition with traditional research papers. Following the modernist Swiss design style and bold typography, I wanted to make a mathematically-constructed grid system that would organise the content in a clean and harmonious way. I was inspired by the works of Wim Crouwel, Karl Gerstner and Josef Müller-Brockmann which all make use of modular square grids & geometric proportions.
